Bargain flights do exist, but you have be adept at working the booking systems to your advantage. Here are some tips on obtaining the best fares: Book in advance but don't book TOO far in advance - Airlines don't drop prices to super-cheap levels until they start to get worried about empty seats. Though if you are planning to travel between June to September, this can be a high risk strategy. Try lots of combinations - If the first price offered on the internet service is very high, hit the back button and try different dates. Even small changes can produce dramatic cost savings, for example: Can you depart from a different airport? For example, Gatwick rather than Heathrow. Are your departure times flexible? Morning and evening flights are usually cheaper than midmorning to late afternoon flights. Mid week flights are normally cheaper than Saturday and Sunday. Try a different internet service - Not all websites deal with the same airlines; you might find the same destination and date at two different prices. (Although you should check if there are any travel restrictions on the cheaper quote.)

You can collect a car from the airport or, if you prefer, use a taxi to initially get to the property, and then they will pick you up and take you into their office to complete the paperwork and then you then you come away with the car. The Bus Station is on Calle de Portugal/Calle Lorenzo Casanova. The Train Station (Estacion de Madrid) is on Avd de la Estacion. The buses leave Alicante at 7.00, 9.00, 10.30am, 12h00, 14h00, 16h00, 18h30 and 20h00. The bus company is called Autocares Costa Azul. Just two bus stops, one at La Mata and then the bus station in Torrevieja. The journey takes about 1 hour. The cost is €3,15 (September 2004) - you must get your bus ticket from the kiosk inside the station first. CROSS CHANNEL FERRY You can take a cross channel ferry directly to one of the two Northern Spanish ports of Santander or Bilbao. For the more adventurous you can take a crossing to one of the French ports such as St Malo. Try Brittany Ferries or P&O Ferries or ferrysavers.com for your cross channel booking enquiry. For planning your journey, use the RAC Route Planner or Mappy.com. With Mappy, you have the choice of with or without tolls. The new Millau bridge in France should cut between about 60 -90 minutes of the old time. Avoid Paris like the plague. Other route planners include Multimap.com, Maporama.com, Greenflag.com, and the AA. Comments fom someone - We drove to Torrevieja via Roscoff in 2003. I was surprised how good the roads were in France and Spain an how straight forward it was. I down loaded an AA road planner but rarely consulted it on route. We left Roscoff at about 10.30am and spent the night in a quaint little hotel in Agen, France. Left at about 9.30am the following morning and found ourselves supping pints in La Mata at about 9pm the same evening. I don't normally like long car journeys but this was a very pleasant experience.
